Sue has been a practicing artist since leaving Art School working in a variety of mediums. Previously Sue did a lot of work in water colour, pen and ink depicting busy social scenes, cafes, parties, street scenes etc. During this time she won the Telecom Art award for a West Coast Pub Scene. After completing a Diploma of Teaching Sue did a few years part-time at the Te Tai Poutini Polytech in Greymouth, teaching Printmaking. Whilst there Sue produced quite a body of work in Wood cuts and Etchings. Around this time Sue was asked to participate in the Muka Youth Print Workshop in Auckland and produced a series of Lithographs which tour New Zealand periodically. The last five years has seen Sue painting predominantly in oils on canvas. This has been a liberating experience for Sue and she now finds herself doing works of a much larger scale. Sue has spent most of her life living and painting on the West Coast of the South Island but has lived in Picton, Marlborough for the last 10 years. Sue exhibits regularly throughout New Zealand.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Liz Kempthorne link - Liz Kempthorne</image:title>
<image:caption>To view Liz’s work at The Gallery Havelock, click here "Very early on I knew the painting for me, was not about putting a photographic image on a canvas, but rather about a painting’s ability to communicate an emotion or a feeling - (my first exhibition Red Roads, was an amateurish but passionate expression of frustration). Also that inspiration came from other stimuli than, as well as, the surrounding landscape - its forms and brilliant intense colours absorbed consciously and unconsciously. When mediaeval and early Renaissance painting and Persian miniatures were studied came the realisation that while having their own individuality and landscape and narrative elements, they often had appealing mystical vibes as they interpreted largely non-secular themes. It was however music and poetry that affected the more, in particular it was the words that produced a visual and emotional image that resonated within me until they became an integral part of the painting process. The small gouache and water colour works like a visual diary where ideas, memories, images both visual and textual flash past; the imprints retrieved later to become larger paintings. The larger works although referenced from and to the smaller are abstractions from them and are more about painting for its own sake. They are pairings that inform each other. Sometimes I am unsure which comes first, the emotion realised by the verbal images created by the poets or the drama of the surrounding physical environment. Perhaps it does not matter which comes first if they inform each other. The landscape has become a metaphor, a construct between observation and emotion; in the painting of course is a metaphor and only reality in the physicality of the paint upon the canvas.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Val Griffith Jones link - Val Griffith Jones</image:title>
<image:caption>To view Val’s work at The Gallery Havelock, click here Picton based artist, Val Griffith Jones describes herself as both a painter and object maker- but don't be deceived by that simple description, her wry intricately worked pieces each has a thought provoking starting point, and carries with it layers of complexity. Using a variety of “homely or womanly” materials and techniques, the three dimensional works encourage the viewer to consider what lies behind what appears to be a straightforward object; here, the titles, offer a particularly helpful insight into the thought process that led to the creation. Landscape painting is a more recent adventure. The works express not only her joy and delight in local landscapes, but increasingly reflect doubt and concern about impact of industry and forestry. This especially present in the Forestry and Port Underwood series. The painting road trip in outback Australia reflects her delight in bold colour and expressive painting. Val has led a rich and varied life since her childhood days in Cornwall, and has been exhibiting work since the 1980’s. The soul baring black humour of her Stuffing On exhibition is well remembered. She is the mother of ‘four delicious boys’ , who have them selves a good number of children. She is still a keen cycle tourist, kayaker and sailor, making the most of the opportunity of living in Marlborough. . Themes which resound in her work include relationships and aging, feminist issues and her responsibility and connection to our environment. Once asked by a reporter if her work was cathartic, she said Yes, -then happily agreed with herself when she looked up the word in a dictionary. Val is happy that her work has remained autobiographical, and finds the more personal the concept, the more it engages the viewer.</image:caption>

<image:caption>To view Clem’s work at The Gallery Havelock, click here Clem Mellish is of Ngā Puhi descent. He lives and works in the small idyllic harbour town of Havelock, situated at the head of Pelorus Sound in the beautiful Marlborough Sounds. His love of daily walks through nearby native forest beside the peaceful waters of Te Hoiere is reflected in the flowing natural forms of his work. The influence of his Māori ancestry is also very strong in both his work and his life. He returns a lot of his energy to his people, as his work is always in demand for special treasures on Māori Marae in tribal areas throughout the country. Clem's greatest love is working stone, watching its colours emerge and adapting design as the stone itself suggests. Pounamu (New Zealand Jade) and Pakohe (Argillite) are his favourite stones. Pakohe is a metamorphosed mudstone, harder than steel and once highly prized for adze making and personal adornment. Pounamu - his first love - is a world class nephrite jade with a rich variety of colour variations. These can have inclusions such as beautiful cloud patterns, or even fishskin-like mottling. When worked into the design these enhance both the appearance and esteem of the work. From these variations come the traditional names Kōkopu for its spotted appearance like a fish of that name "Pipiwhararoa" for the feather-like pattern of the shining cuckoo, and so on. Clem was awarded the Marlborough Living Cultural Treasure Award in 2016.</image:caption>

<image:caption>To view Joanna’s work at The Gallery Havelock, click here Joanna Upperton is a Marlborough based artist with a fun- loving and quirky imagination, which consistently challenges the viewer to find the “twist”. Painting began for Joanna at a very early age, with a sold out exhibition at the tender age of 16. Determination, perseverance, and passion for art have now resulted in a successful international career. Her interests and subject matter include fashion, architectural and/or landscape, and more recently, the inclusion of the figure. Each piece has a slightly surreal flavour, where Joanna desires to create works that will “delight” or “enchant” the viewer. Some works refer to timeless classical beauty, whilst others indicate the humorous side of Joanna’s nature and personality. Joanna’s works are usually extremely intricate and detailed, with a soft playfulness that engages a variety of viewers and buyers. Whilst Joanna’s works are unpredictable in content and subject matter, her painstaking attention to detail is ever present. This, alongside an acute desire to challenge technique through colour, form and subject matter, Joanna Upperton will be someone to watch as one of New Zealand’s new, post-millennium contemporary artists.</image:caption>

<image:caption>To view Saskia’s work at The Gallery Havelock, click here Saskia Smith lives at beautiful Pelorus Bridge, nestled between Nelson and Blenheim – and her work reflects both where she lives and her multi-faceted cultural heritage. Born in the Netherlands, in 2001 she first took up oil painting as a hobby, intending it to be a creative outlet to compliment her existing musical talents and sensory learning. Not surprisingly, her colourful, vibrant paintings, full of richness and life, soon began to capture attention and drawing a positive response from those who saw them. Before long what began as a creative experiment became part of her identity, and her distinctive paintings have since made their way into homes around the world. Her preferred medium is oil on canvas, using both a brush and a palette knife to create her unique works, with recurring themes including landscape and interpretations of flowers. Bright colours and depth characterise her impressionistic work and the comment has been made that her paintings manage to capture a happy feeling, reflecting her love of life, travel and music. It is her hope that her works on canvas will continue to delight and encourage all who see them, including people she may never meet, for many years to come. They are her message, and they are full of sunshine, hope and happiness.</image:caption>

<image:caption>To view Glen’s work at The Gallery Havelock, click here Glen’s journey in clay began after moving to Atlanta GA USA in the 1980’s. She attended Callenwolde Art Centre for 3yrs, learning the ancient technique of hand building with clay to make pottery. Workshops and conferences were a big part of that valuable time she spent being taught by some of the best Ceramic Artists around at that time. Mostly her work is made from slabs of fine white stoneware clay…After the piece is formed, it is burnished to a soft satin sheen using a fine slip known as Terra sigillata (earth’s skin ) If it is a textured form she will add many layers of oxides and slips to achieve the effect she is looking for. The form always dictates the surface finish. “ My work is always changing, and is a lot more contemporary than when I first started. I strive to achieve a feeling of peaceful beauty, as if it has been around a long time and has an aura of calm for the viewer to enjoy. The essence of my work draws on the essence of who I am as a New Zealander …With the oceans and the rivers, mountains and valleys forever influencing the shapes and forms I make in clay.” Glen lives in Fairhall, surrounded by hills overlooking the vineyards and valleys of Marlborough.</image:caption>

She comes from an artistic family and was always encouraged to explore her creative side while growing up. She lived in a very isolated area of the West Coast of NZ when she was young and had no electricity or modern conveniences. This played a large part in nurturing her creative side. “My art is all about self expression. I love to experiment with paint application and discover new effects. I love colour and I love to create colourful textured compositions.” Colour and texture are two repeating themes in Bonnie’s work. Her art is active and dynamic. “For me art is about getting a reaction. If my art engages people, makes them stop to contemplate, if they reach out to touch or return to it for a second look, that is the greatest compliment.” Bonnie holds a level six diploma with honours in art and creativity.</image:caption>

In 1983 I became The Royal New Zealand Navy Official Artist, a position I still hold. As a result, I have been to Britain to paint the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic Fleet Review, returning in 2004 to visit HMS Victory and work on a painting of Lord Nelson, presented to the Royal Navy by the RNZN for the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. Most of my navy paintings are destined for National Archives or presentation to other navies. Paintings and commissions have also taken me to Wales, the Irish Sea, Bahrain, Maldives, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Mongolia, Korea, USA, Australia, the Yellow Sea, Cook Islands, Samoa, the Southern Ocean, the Sub-Antarctic Islands, Fiordland, Hawaii, across the Tasman by ship three times, the Coral Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, Athens, Newfoundland and most of New Zealand. In 2011 my painting of New Zealand Falcons over Mt Tapuaeunuku won its category in an international online art competition in the UAE, and I was sponsored to the UAE for two weeks – the first time I've seen one of my works hanging in a tent. I've also held numerous solo exhibitions throughout New Zealand, as well as participated in joint shows. I began visiting the Marlborough Sounds annually from 1959 (based at Te Rawa) until 1992, when I began to paint the outer sounds. I enjoy painting around Bulwer and D'Urville/Stephens Island area, as well as in Cook Strait, and moved to Marlborough from the West Coast in 2000. I often paint plein air, where I attempt to complete a smaller broader painting outdoors on location in a single session, as I feel these paintings have a charm and spontaneity that cannot be replicated in the studio. My inspiration comes in various ways – often it's my response to a mood generated by the subject, a certain lighting - or simply because I'm attracted to the subject.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>To view Clarry’s work at The Gallery Havelock, click here Clarry Neame describes himself as an Impressionist painter of light. He believes that when you are surrounded by nature’s best, that’s lit with the region’s superb clarity of light, you cannot do or be otherwise. Clarry grew up in Spring Creek near the Wairau River in Marlborough and found his love for drawing and painting at a very young age of four years old. He began his career at Wellington School of Design, then worked in the commercial art field for 26 years. In 1993 Clarry became a professional fine artist and has been the Artist in Residence at Hunters’ Winery in Marlborough since 1996. “Creating is exciting and seeing what happens as I go is magical. The results will take care of themselves. I don’t plan things out. I just start at the top and wander all over the canvas. The most exciting thing is, I don’t know what will happen next. I like to feel the painting. If I’m standing on a cliff and painting the valley below I don’t just paint what I see, I paint what I feel. I am extraordinary privileged to do what I do.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>To view Rick’s work at The Gallery Havelock, click here “Growing up as a child in the headwaters of New Zealand’s Marlborough Sounds, filled me with the longing to follow seagulls and out going tide to the open sea. Huge logs from the Pelorus River would float past our house and I would leap upon them in the hope they would carry me to a far-off sparkling sea with islands, pirates and treasure. My hopes were always thwarted by distraught parents who would pluck me safely before rising seas or nightfall overcame me. Eventually I acquired both the boat and the companions to make many voyages of discovery and adventure in the Narnia-like world that is the Marlborough Sounds. There is nowhere else that so compels me. This sense of longing, and of belonging, motivates my art. It is an attempt to celebrate a unique combination of light, land, wind, and ocean. In this sense my paintings are not “scenes”, though they are of recognizable features, but of rather a statement, each in its own way monumental, of what is the Marlborough Sounds. In many paintings my own presence is acknowledged by the ripples of my passing vessel. It is my signature upon the sea. I paint full-time, and either work in oils, or acrylic and airbrush. My work is represented in many public and private collections in New Zealand an d around the world. As well as gallery paintings, I produce work on commission, and undertake many large format murals. I live and work from Moenui, on the Queen Charlotte Drive, Marlborough.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Born in Hastings, Hawkes Bay, Troy Waring currently lives in the inspirational Marlborough Sounds. “My artwork is what I would call 'evolving abstract'. I have only ever used oils and currently work on board as I found that my technique was too rough for canvas. I love the challenge of working with oil paint. It is so unforgiving yet so rewarding. More often than not my paintings have a habit of changing on me so I never quite know what I'm going to get. Each one is truly unique; I doubt very much I could ever repeat the same painting twice and to be honest that suits me just fine. Being a painter, a potter and a sculptor of timber, there is just never enough time in the day to use up all that creativity. Like many others, the Covid lockdown unleashed a whole new way of looking at the world and how we live in it. My art was born from that time of reflection and there is no stopping it now.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Artists - Joanna Upperton</image:title>
<image:caption>Joanna Upperton is a Marlborough based artist with a fun- loving and quirky imagination, which consistently challenges the viewer to find the “twist”.

<image:caption>New Zealand artist Sue Syme graduated with a Diploma of Fine Arts in 1981.

<image:caption>Glen is a Ceramic Artist living in Fairhall. Her studio is surrounded by the wonderful hills, vineyards and valleys of Marlborough, New Zealand. She studied the ancient clay technique of hand building at the Callanwolde Art Centre in Atlanta USA for 3 years, and feels very fortunate to have been taught by some of the best Ceramic Artists of the time. Since returning to NZ she has exhibited her work both nationally and locally achieving numerous awards and her sculptural pieces are now being enjoyed in homes around the world. Glen’s work offers a distinct artistic expression of contrasts - Showing both strength and fragility … tension and spontaneity. She strives to portray a sense of peace, calm and beauty for the viewer to enjoy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I began painting professionally in 1975, on the West Coast, as an artist for the New Zealand Forest Service, before leaving to work full time on my own pieces.

<image:caption>Renate is in love with New Zealand. The organic nature of its’ shape and colours is evident in her work. Originally from Germany, she has studied Graphic Design and trained in organic farming. Renate calls on these disciplines in the creation of her ceramic art pieces. She admits to being fascinated by the effects of working with fire and the elements of surprise that can emerge from her kiln. The pottery wheel, hand building and slab work are all used in her creations and are often enhanced by the Raku firing technique. Since 1996 Renate has run her own gallery in the Marlborough Sounds from which she finds much of her inspiration. All her work is created - thrown, built, fired and painted on the premises. “I love working with my hands and through pottery I can express myself as I try to capture the colours and the peace of nature around me”.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Artists - Liz Kempthorne</image:title>
<image:caption>"Very early on I knew the painting for me, was not about putting a photographic image on a canvas, but rather about a painting’s ability to communicate an emotion or a feeling - (my first exhibition Red Roads, was an amateurish but passionate expression of frustration).

      <image:title>Artists - Saskia Smith</image:title>
<image:caption>Saskia Smith lives at beautiful Pelorus Bridge, nestled between Nelson and Blenheim – and her work reflects both where she lives and her multi-faceted cultural heritage.

<image:caption>Bonnie Coad is a visual artist practicing chiefly in acrylics/collage.

      <image:title>Artists - Clarry Neame</image:title>
<image:caption>Clarry Neame describes himself as an Impressionist painter of light.

<image:caption>“Growing up as a child in the headwaters of New Zealand’s Marlborough Sounds, filled me with the longing to follow seagulls and out going tide to the open sea.

<image:caption>Jarod became passionate about photography as a teenager in 2005. He started photographing birds and insects and then moved onto landscapes. Often tramping and camping high in the mountains Jarod searched for the perfect shot. He has spent weeks photographing a single location to capture it in the best light and then put many images together to create very high resolution digital art. Jarod also likes to paint landscapes experimenting with different techniques using his many photographs as inspiration. Jarod lives in Blenheim and focuses his art on Marlborough and New Zealand’s diverse landscape.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Born in Southland New Zealand in 1948, Lindsay spent seven years in Australia and a year in Ireland in the 1970’s before returning home to New Zealand in 1978. He studied photography in Melbourne and worked subsequently in photography and photographic printing, setting up his own business in Napier, doing both professional and amateur photography. Lindsay began painting in 2000 and in 2003 he moved to Marlborough. Sell out exhibitions of his work have been held nationally, including galleries in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. His artwork hangs in many New Zealand and international collections. Lindsay finds inspiration in many areas like the history present in rustic buildings or traces of man in the landscape. His chosen medium is oil painting on linen canvas. “Different people relate to different paintings, but there is something of me in all of them.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Artists - Clem Mellish</image:title>
<image:caption>Clem Mellish is of Ngā Puhi descent.

<image:caption>Mike Andre. Mike splits his days between his houseboat in Pelorus Sound and a tiny studio hidden deep in Marlborough vineyards. His jewellery combines SILVER with almost EVERYTHING, because if we pay attention there is beauty in everything. Only exemptions being materials which are often paid for in a misery of Earth’s environment, animals, or humans. For Mike simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.</image:caption>
